Open Mouth Bagging Line FAQs
Find answers about suitable materials, bag compatibility, filling systems, weighing accuracy, production capacity and equipment configuration.
What materials can be packed on an open mouth bagging line?
VTOPS open mouth bagging lines are primarily configured for powders and free-flowing granular products. Typical powder applications include flour, milk powder, starch, food ingredients, chemical powder and mineral powder. Granular applications may include sugar, salt, grain, seeds, fertilizer granules and other products with stable flow characteristics.
Material category alone is not enough to select the equipment. Bulk density, particle size, moisture content, dust level, flowability and tendency to bridge or compact should also be evaluated. Product samples are recommended before the filling system and expected performance are confirmed.
What types of open mouth bags can the system handle?
The system can be configured for open mouth paper bags, woven polypropylene bags and polyethylene bags. Compatibility depends on the bag width, length, opening construction, material stiffness, inner liner and required closing method. Bags that appear similar may behave differently during placement, clamping, filling and transfer.
Customers should provide bag samples or detailed bag drawings before the equipment design is finalized. Testing helps confirm the bag-clamp dimensions, filling spout, conveyor height and whether the finished bag should be sewn, heat sealed or closed using another method.
Should I use an auger filler or a weighing filler?
An auger filling system is generally selected for fine, dusty, cohesive or difficult-to-flow powders because the auger provides controlled material movement. A weighing and gravity feeding system is more suitable for free-flowing granular products that can flow consistently through the feeding gate.
The final selection also depends on the target bag weight, required capacity and acceptable product giveaway. Some applications require gross weighing, where the bag is weighed during filling, while others use net weighing, where the product is weighed before being discharged into the bag. What makes the VTOPS-P5 PRO suitable for fine and high-value powders?
The VTOPS-P5 PRO uses a bottom-up filling method designed for fine, dusty and easily aerated powders. The filling head descends toward the bottom of the bag before filling begins and rises gradually as the material level increases. This shortens the powder drop distance, helping suppress dust, reduce material loss and limit air trapped inside the powder.
The machine is equipped with a METTLER TOLEDO industrial weighing system with a 0.001 kg weighing resolution and uses fast and slow feeding stages for precise final-weight control. It is particularly valuable for high-value powders where product giveaway and dust loss must be minimized. Optional vacuum deaeration and explosion-protection configurations are available for certain metal-powder applications, subject to material safety data, explosion-risk assessment and hazardous-area requirements.
What determines the production capacity of a bagging line?
Actual production capacity is affected by the target bag weight, material flowability, dosing time, weighing accuracy, bag-placement method and bag-closing speed. On a semi-automatic system, operator efficiency may become the main limitation because each empty bag must be positioned before filling.
Capacity can be improved through optimized feeding, larger dosing components, automatic bag handling or faster downstream closing and conveying. However, increasing filling speed without allowing sufficient time for dust control and product settling may reduce stability. The expected bags-per-minute output should therefore be evaluated for the complete packaging cycle.
What information is needed to configure an open mouth bagging line?
To prepare an accurate proposal, provide the product name, bulk density, particle size, flow characteristics, target bag weight, required capacity and working environment. Material samples are especially helpful when the product is dusty, cohesive, aerated or difficult to discharge consistently.
VTOPS also needs the bag dimensions, bag material, opening details, closing method, available factory layout, power supply and compressed-air conditions. Bag samples and product samples allow the filling, clamping and closing processes to be evaluated before the final configuration is approved. Contact VTOPS to discuss your bagging application.
